Knock, knock, who's there? - Colombia - Episode 5

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

The historic center of Cartagena de Indias is an open-air museum. The houses, the churches, the shops, conceal many more interesting details from each other. The knockers found there particularly caught my attention.

Symbol of distinction, social class and power, for which there is even a proverb.

At tal casa, tal aldaba

At such a house, such a knocker

Each model has its own meaning.

The lizard meant that one was part of or descended from the royal family.

The lion signified that one was in the army or in the Church, and was almost always intended for the doors of churches.

The fish or the marine figures meant that one was a trader.

From the hand, it was said to be the hand of the Virgin of Fátima, therefore, it was a religious family.

Cartagena is beautiful. I will share its secrets with you over the next few weeks.
